Welcome to Junior Math Olympiad — Arithmetic — 50 Problems from Past Papers with Detailed Solutions: Introductory & Intermediate Level

This book is not just about memorizing operations or applying rules—it is about learning to think mathematically through numbers, patterns, and relationships. Arithmetic is one of the most fundamental branches of mathematics, connecting counting, logic, and problem-solving. Every problem in this book is designed not only to test your knowledge, but also to develop your creativity, precision, and numerical fluency.

To support your learning, the book also includes about ten pages of essential arithmetic formulas, rules, and key concepts, including divisibility, prime numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and order of operations, carefully organized for quick revision and easy reference before, during, or after solving.

Arithmetic goes far beyond addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It teaches you how to manipulate numbers, interpret relationships between quantities, and uncover hidden structures within mathematical problems. Rather than relying on routine methods, you will learn to explore multiple approaches, combine ideas, and build solutions step by step with clarity and confidence.

Why practice problems from past papers? Because they expose you to the style, depth, and creativity of real competition mathematics. Solving arithmetic problems strengthens logical thinking, improves mental calculation skills, and trains you to recognize important number properties, divisibility tricks, and patterns under pressure. These abilities are valuable not only for mathematics competitions, but also for computer science, finance, data analysis, and many everyday situations.

Equally important, this journey develops perseverance. Some problems may appear difficult or unfamiliar at first—and that is completely normal. True mathematical progress comes from experimenting, making mistakes, trying different strategies, and gradually discovering the path to the solution. Through this process, you will build patience, resilience, and confidence in your own reasoning.

All the problems in this book focus on arithmetic: divisibility, prime factorization, greatest common divisors, least common multiples, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, exponents, square roots, and basic number theory. Each exercise is followed by a fully detailed, step-by-step solution designed to explain not only the method, but also the reasoning behind every step.

The progression of the exercises has been carefully designed. Some problems are accessible and direct, while others require deeper insight and persistence. Do not rush. Arithmetic is not only about speed—it is about observation, structure, and logical reasoning. Take time to write down intermediate steps, test different operations, and check your results. Often, the most satisfying solutions emerge after thoughtful exploration.

Most importantly, remember that every accomplished mathematician once started exactly where you are now: learning fundamental ideas, developing number sense, and discovering the beauty of mathematics one problem at a time.

Your arithmetic journey begins here.

Now, let's begin.
