Alicia Stone's life is filled with a steady stream of disappointment. After a devastating breakup, the law school graduate quickly tumbles into a deep depression, unable to secure meaningful employment, and fearful that more trouble is to come.
Desperate to do something with her time, she finds a job in a quaint English bookshop, where she meets a man who may help ease her heartache. Soon she discovers her hopes for a reprieve from her situation are short-lived when a killer targets people connected to the shop.
With residents of the small town and her ex-boyfriend, the local police chief, on edge, Alicia is thrust to the center of a murder investigation. As the body count rises, conspiracy theories and desperation lead law enforcement to believe a key member of a secret brotherhood may be to blame, but there's one major problem – he also happens to be the man Alicia has grown fond of.
