Fanny Cochrane Smith made sure her people’s songs would never be silenced. Born at Wybalenna and later living at Oyster Cove and Nicholls Rivulet, Fanny learned, taught and protected Tasmanian Aboriginal culture through story and song.
In 1899 and 1903 she recorded songs and language onto wax cylinders (the only surviving audio of original Tasmanian Aboriginal languages). which ensured the future generations could hear their ancestors’ voices.
