If you think you cannot do this, remember Parkinson’s Law, which stipulates that a task will increase in complexity and importance according to the time you allot to its completion. Its application is simple. Suppose you are given a task and asked to complete it in 24 hours. You will find a way to do it somehow. If, however, you were given a week to complete the same task, it would magically increase in complexity and take the whole week to finish. If you were given a month, its complexity and importance would increase so much that it would take the entire month to finish. Interestingly, if you were able to compare the end product from the 24-hour deadline with that from the month-long deadline, you would in all probability find that the work from the former will be equal to or even better than the latter.

So rather than asking yourself what your goal is, ask yourself: what excites me? This will help you become more comfortable with setting unrealistic goals.

No one can sustain a high-level energy and interest for anything indefinitely. Everyone needs to let go periodically, so that they can rebuild their energy and interest levels. Regular breaks ensure that work does not become a chore.

Think about your work over the past year or so. Has it become any better? If not, then maybe it’s time to cut your losses and take the leap, just like Hans did.
