I repeat: even in a poor country, gradual social change can bring about more equal distribution of goods and can solve important social problems, both by promoting respect for human life, and by reducing injustice and inequality that may exist.

Then I began learning about political geography. The maps of each continent were beautifully colored: the English colonies—in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Oceania, India, Burma, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia—were in red. I remember this very well, and it had nothing to do with communism. That map was almost all red.

Perhaps the greatest accomplishment these military governments will be remembered for is that they turned all of their citizens into “millionaires.”
