    JEAN: (Entering.) A gentleman is asking if Monsieur is at home?
    VATELIN: Who is it?

    LUCIENNE, VATELIN, then JEAN, then MITZI.
    VATELIN: Would you give me a moment, darling, while I get rid of this woman? (He rings the bell.)
    LUCIENNE: Of course. I’ll see you very soon, darling. (She exits.)
    JEAN: You rang, Sir?
    VATELIN: Yes. Show the lady in. (JEAN ushers in MITZI, then exits. VATELIN sits at the table, shuffling his papers, and pretending to be busy.) If you’d just take a seat, Madame

    JEAN: (Entering.) Madame Pontagnac.
    ALL: What?!!!
    PONTAGNAC: (Aside.) Good Lord! My wife!
    ALL: Your wife?

    LUCIENNE, PONTAGNAC, JEAN, REDILLON.
    JEAN: (Entering with REDILLON) Monsieur Rédillon.
    LUCIENNE: Come in, my dear friend! Come in! You can help me. (Making the introductions.) Monsieur Ernest Rédillon, Monsieur Pontagnac, both friends of my husband. (The two men greet one another.) Now you know me well. Please explain to this gentleman that I am a model wife and would never be unfaithful to my husband unless he’d shown me the way.
